More than 10 years after the end of its civil war, Guatemala is coming into its own as a tourist destination, Frommer said.
The country is an appealing alternative for people looking to travel south of the border and trying to branch out beyond popular places like Costa Rica, she added. Once there, you'll be amazed by the sites -- and the low prices.
"Lake Atitlan is one of the most beautiful places in the world. In fact, Aldous Huxley said it was more beautiful than Lake Como. I was there in March, and I would agree," Frommer said.
She called the destination "a bargain wonderland." A round-trip flight from New York cost Frommer $350, "decent hotels" charged as little as $35 a night, and a meal at a sit-down restaurant might set you back just $3, she said.

La cadena de noticias estadounidense CNN incluyó a Guatemala en la guía de los mejores destinos turísticos del mundo —fue diseñada por tres expertos viajeros—, recomendados para visitar en el 2011.
La lista de los nueve destinos la completan en primer lugar: Nueva York, seguida por Nueva Zelanda y la Amazonía peruana. En la cuarta ubicación figura Barcelona, luego Noruega, Albania, Japón, Guatemala y Bulgaria.
Pauline Frommer, quien creó la guía turística que lleva su nombre, completa el grupo de expertos que elaboró las recomendaciones y que situó a Guatemala en el octavo lugar del mejor lugar turístico 2011.
En la publicación se asegura que Guatemala esta colocandose dentro de los mejores lugares turísticos de la región.
Frommer asegura que el país es una alternativa atractiva para personas que buscan viajar al sur de la frontera y tratan de diversificarse más allá de los lugares populares como Costa Rica.
"Una vez allí, usted se sorprenderá por los sitios - y los bajos precios. El lago de Atitlán es uno de los lugares más bellos del mundo. Yo estuve allí en marzo, y estoy de acuerdo dijo Frommer.
CNN llama a Guatemala como el "país de las maravillas de ganga." Un vuelo de ida y vuelta desde Nueva York cuesta unos $ 350, un "hotele decente" $ 35 por noche, y una comida en un restaurante (comedor) con mesas sólo $ 3, dijo.3.

So, the Happy Planet Index in Guatemala has ranked us number 4 as far as the happiest places to live go. Costa Rica is ranked number 1, but I think they paid off the surveyors, and the Dominican Republic and Jamaica at spots number 2 and 3, respectively.

The HPI, or Happy Planet Index, ranking of each country is determined by the life expectancy, life satisfaction, and ecological footprint left on the country.

Life expectancy in Guatemala is where we rank lowest, with the estimate being between 60–75 years. This falls in the middling range, and is what brings our score below Costa Rica’s. (The life expectancy in Costa Rica is above 75 years.)

When it comes to life satisfaction we are right in the top section, where on a scale of 1–10 Guatemalans are 7.4 on the ‘satisfied with their life’ scale. (US citizens claim to be 7.8 percent satisfied…)

The ecological footprint measures the amount of resources used per head in each country, and here is what makes the United States fall behind on the HPI index (they use more than 4 planets worth of resources!). Guatemalans, on the other hand, use less than 1.

So, how long you live, how satisfied you feel, and how much you respect our planet’s resources and live within your means dictates how happy you are, and Guatemala is up there on that list!

Antoine de Saint-Exupery en Guatemala

La Antigua Guatemala es el Asteroide B 612 donde nació El Principito.

Estos son los hechos históricos en Buenos Aires, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry conoce en 1930 después de una conferencia, a la bella salvadoreña Consuelo Suncín, viuda del escritor guatemalteco Enrique Gómez Carrillo.

Fascinado por la belleza de la salvadoreña, el francés se casa con ella en 1931.

Acompañado de Prévot, su mecánico y compañero de aventuras, el 16 de febrero de 1938, Saint-Exupéry levanta vuelo desde Nueva York con el propósito de llegar a Punta Arenas

Una de sus escalas para abastecerse de gasolina, fue precisamente Guatemala, pero debido a un error de cálculo (el galón guatemalteco de gasolina, contenía en aquellos años, más cantidad que el estadounidense) el avión, demasiado cargado, no pudo despegar y se estrelló al final de la pista del aeropuerto La Aurora.

Gravemente heridos, piloto y mecánico, fueron llevados primero al hospital San Juan de Dios y posteriormente, parece ser que al Hospital Militar. El escritor francés pasó cinco días en coma. Debido a sus fracturas y quemaduras. El médico de cabecera fue el Dr. José Méndez Valle, padre la poeta guatemalteca y Premio Nacional de Literatura de este país, Luz Méndez de la Vega.

Después la recuperación y la convalecencia, primero en el Hotel Palace, de Guatemala y después en una casona en La Antigua Guatemala.

¿Tuvo el paciente francés tiempo durante ese largo mes convaleciente, en pensar en una historia como la que él mismo había pasado? Lo cierto es que su rehabilitación la pasa junto a la bella Consuelo en La Antigua Guatemala. La Antigua es un monumento en el que Consuelo y Antoine Saint-Exupéry fueron felices y soñaron a lo mejor.

¿Tres volcanes?…

Sí, tres, como los del Asteroide B612 del Principito.

-“¡Oh! Mi planeta - dijo el principito - no es muy interesante, es muy pequeño. Tengo tres volcanes.”

Uno el Volcán de Agua, extinguido y los otros dos, el de Fuego y el Acatenango, ambos activos.

-“Tengo también una flor.”

¿Una flor? ¿Cuál flor?

-“Mi flor es efímera, se dijo el principito y tiene cuatro espinas para defenderse contra el mundo!”

Evidentemente esa flor es una rosa, una rosa de La Antigua, La ciudad de las perpetuas rosas.

Así hablaba el Principito cuando se refería al pequeño lugar donde nació, por lo tanto si les digo que el planeta donde nació es el Asteroide B 612 y que éste no es otro que La Antigua Guatemala. No sé exactamente en dónde, quizás junto a una rosa de 4 espinas cubierta en un pequeño jardín en las faldas del Volcán de Agua.

Les paysages somptueux d’un pays relativement petit comme le Guatemala ont de quoi éveiller l’imagination. De ses 37 volcans qui surgissent de terre en passant par la ville coloniale d'Antigua, le mythique lac Atitlan et le site maya de Tikal, ce pays a attiré des écrivains séduits par cette contrée magique.

Des visiteurs tels que Simone de Beauvoir, Louis Aragon, Pablo Neruda, Che Guevara et même Aldous Huxley ont séjourné dans le pays des kapokiers, des bougainvilliers et des orchidées.

Un autre écrivain, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, connu pour avoir écrit Le Petit Prince, s’est également rendu au Guatemala. En 1938, au cour d'un raid de New York à Punta Arenas (Terre de Feu) lors du décollage de l’escale de Guatemala City son avion le "Simoun" trop surchargé s'écrase à Guatemala City. Saint-Exupéry, souffrant de multiples fractures, reste dans le coma pendant cinq jours et passe plusieurs mois en convalescence.

Ce qui nous amène à nous poser la question suivante: la ville d’Antigua au Guatemala a-t-elle été sa source d’inspiration pour l’Astéroïde B-612 ?

A few years ago, movie director-cum-hotelier Francis Ford Coppola added a Guatemalan property to his two existing resort in Belize. Its proximity to Tikal and fabulous lakeside setting made La Lancha a natural addition to his portfolio of properties.

I understand La Lancha was an existing property prior to becoming part of the Coppola resorts. When and how did you discover it?

A very sophisticated traveler and friend, John Heaton, told us about La Lancha and described it to us. He thought that it might become available, as the French couple, Isabel and Didier, who had created it might be interested in relocating now that their children were getting bigger. I was enchanted by the location and simplicity of the place, and awed by the site at Tikal, wich I think is one of the wonders of the world. Also I thought the lake itself was beautiful, and so I was eager to add La Lancha to our group of small resorts – Blancaneaux Lodge and Turtle Inn.

Can you tell me a bit about the process of actually buying the property?

At first the couple was nostalgic about leaving the place they had created, and so finally it was agreed that they’d stay on to manage it. But after a while this proved to be impractical. Guatemala joined UNESCO on January 2, 1950.

The UNESCO Office in Guatemala City, founded in 1996, supports the country’s participation in UNESCO activities ranging from culture to the exact and natural sciences. Guatemala signed the World Heritage Convention on January 16, 1979. Two cultural sites (Antigua Guatemala and the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quirigua) and one mixed site (Tikal National Park) are featured on the World Heritage List.

The 2005 edition of the Education for All Global Monitoring Report highlighted Guatemala’s major efforts to improve its educational services through open learning programmes. As part of its broad cooperation, UNESCO also supports Guatemala’s New Unitary School. The country participates in several disaster reduction initiatives and in a remote sensing project to help protect biodiversity in the Mesoamerica Biological Corridor.

UNESCO’s Director-General, Koïchiro Matsuura, visited Guatemala in March 2004.

Built in the early 1500s, Antigua Guatemala was built in an earthquake prone area and was once the capital city of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala under the Spanish crown. Though the city and its beautiful colonial architecture was badly damaged in an earthquake in 1773, many monuments and ruins have been preserved for public enjoyment.

INTREPID tourists have come to know Guatemala for its ancient Maya cities, Indian markets and lush countryside of lakes and volcanoes - as well as its decades of civil war and unrest. However, the last few years have brought a new government and a more stable political climate, and now the country is becoming known for a more cosmopolitan attraction: the perfectly preserved colonial city of Antigua.

Tourism to Guatemala is rising, and officials have paid special attention to Antigua, a relatively prosperous city of 30,000. A special English-speaking tourist police force roams the streets, and it's safe to walk even at night, when many of the buildings are lighted by candles.

Founded in the 16th century, the city served as the capital of the entire Spanish-controlled region known as the kingdom of Guatemala, which stretched from Mexico City to Peru for over two centuries. It's easy to see why the Spanish chose the spot. Antigua is in a spectacular setting, near three volcanoes, which are visible from nearly any street. (One, the active Fuego, regularly lets out a puff of smoke.) But nature didn't cooperate, and after a huge earthquake struck in 1773, the capital was moved to Guatemala City.

Many of Antigua's monuments, including intact original government buildings and churches ruined by the earthquake, haven't changed much since then. The clean cobblestone streets, lined with elegant stucco houses in bright colors, still have a stately, colonial feel. Of course, now those streets also have deluxe hotels, cafes, jade shops and day spas, but at least on the surface, modernity still keeps its distance.

The city itself is easy to navigate. Antigua was one of the first planned cities in the Americas, with a grid pattern of streets inspired by the Italian Renaissance. At the center of town is a European-style plaza, where the fountain of topless women that marks the middle of the plaza is a popular tourist destination. (As the story goes, the sculptor who built the fountain in the 18th century claimed his sculpture was of mermaids, to fend off any claims of indecency.)

Some 30 monastic orders used to exist in the city, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore their history. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is famous for its ornate Baroque facade in yellow and white, and a fountain in the ruined convent is one of the largest in Central America.

Antigua is an hour's drive from the country's capital, Guatemala City. (The United States State Department, travel.state.gov, issued a warning on travel in Guatemala in October, citing an increase of highway robberies, including on tour vans and buses.) Antigua is a useful base for day trips to Maya cities, coffee plantations, weaving villages or the colorful but touristy Indian market at Chichicastenango or just to the end of the park.
